Museum Without Walls, Gallery Without Roof

The great Jonathan Meades is publishing his new book through Unbound, it will be the first time that scripts from his documentaries have been put into print and will bring many of his articles and other writings together as well. Here's the pitch:
It’s an astonishment, maybe even an outrage, that Jonathan Meades’ writing and thinking about the hundreds of places he’s visited have never been edited into a book before.
Over the coming months you will watch it come together as he sifts through the scripts to sixty films, and the hundreds of pieces and he has written and delivered over the past twenty years. The plan is to produce a handsome volume (heavy on the handfeel) containing five full scripts of his most important TV films (illustrated with stills) and about forty pieces, including ten longer essays. Very little of this material will have been read by a general audience; the scripts, in particular, have never appeared in print before and offer an extraordinary insight into Meades meticulous working methods and his subversive visual style.
Head to Unbound to put yourself down for a copy, whether an ebook, a hardback or one of the more personalised options (Update: hardback copies are now available from Amazon).

Green done right: innovation, not taxation. The video below is from Human Planet, an exceptional BBC wildlife documentary strand.

I love Art Deco; the lettering above the shop is so bold and has such beautiful proportions.

Treehouses

From David Thompson's Friday roundup comes a collection of German Treehouses. They are incredibly impressive and put the rickety dollhouses seen on these shores to shame.

Joe Building

Jonathan Meades has just finished his latest series, Magnetic North; once again, relegated to digital, this will not have reached anywhere near the audience it deserves (even on the excellent BBC Four). The programme asked why we are so drawn to the South and toured the cities of the Hanseatic League in order to find a definitive North, but it was in Meades' handling of the dual Totalitarianisms of Nazism and Stalinism that the documentary excelled. Meades is blunt about the similarities between the two and his contempt for 'Ostalgia' and similar romanticisation of the abhorrent Soviet regime. He has tackled Stalin - and his unique aesthetic sensibilities - before, and you can watch that programme, Joe Building, below:

Books

Books to the ceiling,
Books to the sky,
My pile of books is a mile high.
How I love them! How I need them!
I'll have a long beard by the time I read them.
